99 punks or 1 over-achiever?
TV stories competition for teens “Media Tube”, organized during March-May 2009 by SHOTRON, in partnership with the Bucharest's "Inspectoratul Școlar" and with the valuable support of the Humanitas and Tritonic Publishing Houses and the newspaper Cotidianul, has opposed almost 100 young reporters from 10 Bucharest high-schools.
The 20 teams in competition were especially attracted by the theme “Over-achievers or punks: cliches vs. reality about teenagers in the Romanian media”, but they have also boldly approached subjects related to the teens image as reflected in broadcast or print media.
The general opinion of the youngsters asked in the TV stories was that teenagers are not "seen" by the media as they really are and neither can they find subjects of TV shows addressed to them. The winning story tackles the theme of the television for the teenagers, underlining the lack of adequate shows, targeted to that age.

Sex... in cartoons
SHOTRON considers as unacceptable the broadcast of inappropiate materials for the target audience by the cartoon TV channel Mimimax. The materials which launch the SHOTRON protest are two episodes having explicit sexual content from the series "Stories of the Hungarian Folklore":"The princess's birth signs" and "The Judge's Wise Daughter".
Because the Minimax' headquarters are situated in the Czech Republic, the National Council of the Audiovisual sanctioned the channel with a minimum advertisement, without any consequences for the channel.
An admirable period of time of over 4 years, the Minimax programs were a faithful ally of the game pedagogy, also recommended by SHOTRON.
SHOTRON is addressing all persons and organization actively preoccupied of the authentic children education for a plus of vigilance, which becomes more and more necessary.
To mention also that the episodes were broadcasted first at 19:00, the hour of the "Evening Story", hour of maximum primetime and were at least twice retuned ("The Judge's Wise Daughter on Tuesday, 13th of January at 11:57 and on Wednesday, 14th January at 15:57).

Media Literacy in Romania
Parents' playground and children's workshop
"SHOTRON" launches for the first time in Romania the Media Literacy Program (MLP). The program is targeting children between 6 and 11 of age and aims to provide children the necessary knowledge in order to distinguish from various forms of media, to comprehend the message shown by mass-media and to choose the proper ways of media expression.
"Children are exposed to a constant informational flow by the media. They receive in a daily manner informational that contains extremely complex messages. As we all know, today media plays a very important role in our children's lives; regardless if they are watching cartoons on TV, they are surfing the Web, they are playing computer games or they are reading a magazine, children are assaulted by messages of our consumers' society:commercials, advertising, hidden messages. Even if not all messages are targeting children, they have to know how to interpret them and how to consciously chose what's right for them" says Iulia Radu, President of SHOTRON.
"In a consumers' society, in which everyone is trying to sell with all price, ignoring the consequences, SHOTRON is aiming to recommend parents and children in Romania the proper and the les "commercial" media product, to guide children in the direction that suits them, and not in the one where others are trying to lead them", concluded Iulia Radu.
